Programme ‘Tampal Rumah’ by Insaf Technical Relief – Shelter Cluster
Insaf Technical Relief Malaysia or Insaf Malaysia for short, it is a non-profit organization, which, regardless of race, religion, politics or gender, specializes in bringing humanitarian and technical relief (medicines and medical services, food, clean water supply and sanitation and shelter) aside from performing co-ordination and logistic duties in areas affected by natural disasters like earthquake, landslide, flood, Tsunami, volcano explosion and others such calamities. Insaf Malaysia comprises four clusters- food, wash, shelter and medical which operate both in Malaysia and abroad. The last few months have witness a flurry of activities within Malaysia, aimed at the “Orang Asal” communities.
With this in mind on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of November 2012, Insaf Technical Relief Malaysia introduced their new programme called “Tampal Rumah”. The programme, which has been scheduled for the months of October, November and December, was devised by the 'Shelter Cluster' of Insaf Technical Relief Malaysia and is specifically aimed at the Orang Asal settlement of Kg. Gumum in Tasik Chini, Pahang. Few weeks prior to the commencement of the programme, a survey was carried out by some volunteers and 5 houses were selected for minor and major repairs or for reconstruction.
The first project undertaken was the reconstruction of a house for Robert, a local “Orang Asal’ and the tagline for this mission was “24 people, 24 hours and 1 home”.
Forty students, twenty boys and twenty girls from the Faculty of Civil Engineering of UiTM.joined in the mission and volunteered to help because they wanted more first-hand experience in building and also in community work. All tools and materials and trained professionals were provided by Insaf Malaysia. Major Anuar, head of the Shelter cluster, divided the students into 4 clusters, namely, food, wash, shelter and medical. Twenty students formed the Shelter cluster and had to work in rotating shifts of 3 hours each. There were problems and hiccups, of course but on the whole everyone worked very, very hard to get the house finished and finish it they did!
We want to thank everyone, students and volunteers alike for their amazing efforts.
The objective of the mission was to help the needy but also to get young people involved in charity work. We also would like to highlight the fact that more money is needed in order to help poor people, not just around the world but more specifically here in Malaysia.
